In this blog, we explore the impact of these tariffs on the Indian steel industry and what the future might hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date:<\/strong> Effective from <strong>March 12, 2025<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Policy:<\/strong> The <strong>United States has imposed a flat 25% tariff<\/strong> on <strong>all steel imports<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impact:<\/strong> It <strong>ends all country-specific exemptions<\/strong>, meaning <strong>India is no longer excluded<\/strong> from these tariffs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Indirect Impact: Rising Imports<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India imposed a provisional <strong>12% safeguard duty<\/strong> in April 2025 to protect domestic producers amid falling steel prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Japan &amp; South Korea<\/strong> are redirecting steel exports to India, <strong>increasing import competition<\/strong>. These countries supply over 50% of India\u2019s steel imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the direct impact is limited ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India exports only 95,000 tonnes of steel to the US annually.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This volume represents:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Less than 0.07% of India&#8217;s total steel production<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Only 6% of its total steel exports<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>direct impact<\/strong> of the new <strong>25% US tariff<\/strong> on Indian steel <strong>exports is minimal<\/strong> because the US is not a significant export destination for Indian steel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chart on the right (Steel | CR Coil: 1Y Trend) shows a <strong>temporary price dip<\/strong> around Jan 2025, possibly reflecting market sentiment or anticipation of the policy change.
